Nortel has upgraded its network access control (NAC) technology -- Nortel Secure Network Access 2.0 (SNA 2.0) -- to cover VoIP, unified communications and data in the environments of other manufacturers, including Cisco and Hewlett-Packard. The recent enforcement modes, based on the 802.1X and simple network management protocol (SNMP) standards, supplement existing support for dynamic host configuration protocol, as well as Nortel's own protocol to provide the multi-vendor capability.

SNA 2.0 authenticates user identity, and its role-based access limits users to authorized applications. SNA 2.0 uses Nortel's Secure Network Access Switch Series, including the recent SNAS 4070.
