The Power Systems slices served up on the IBM Cloud running IBM i and AIX were first rolled out for early access to selected customers to test the APIs for the control plane, which they presume is based on the PowerVC implementation of OpenStack. The initial customers who are kicking the tires were putative to only deploy progress and test environments or protype code, certainly not anything running in production. This was totally meant to be a proof of concept setup at this point, as you can perceive from the rollout roadmap:
The alpha and beta testing for the Power Systems slices on the IBM Cloud is on a pretty speedy track, running from February into March, as you can see, and generic availability is slated for some time in March. Probably somewhere towards the end, they would guess. IBM is initially making the Power puffs – what else can you convene them as shorthand? – available in the early access tests in its US East datacenter in the Washington DC metro area; it is not limpid what iron was used. Both of the machines are being configured with 32 GB memory sticks, which are again at the sweet spot between capacity, bandwidth, and cost per bit, and IBM is allowing customers to configure the machines with anywhere from 8 GB to 64 GB of main memory per core. If you want denser memory to bolster the capacity, you can double it up using 64 GB memory sticks, and then double it up again to 128 GB sticks, but this will be a custom order and it will cost considerably more, they think. IBM is offering disk and sparkle storage up to 2 TB for local storage on the instances and growing at 10 GB increments. External storage for applications and databases is on Storwize V7000 disk arrays in the racks near this Power iron, and are linked to the servers by Fibre Channel switches. Customers can share machines or rent dedicated iron, depending on their proclivities for absolute security and dealing with clamorous neighbors on the virtual infrastructure.
Steve Sibley vice president and offering manager for the Cognitive Systems division at IBM, gave me a sneak peek at the future Power cloud slices on a visit to the Austin, Texas labs terminal week, ahead of the reason conference. Here is how the features and functions of the rational partitions on the IBM Cloud are shaping up:
Sibley told us that the pricing was not yet set in stone for the virtual Power capacity on the IBM Cloud, but when pressed about comparing the cost between buying gear and renting it on the cloud, Sibley estimated that for a given IBM i or AIX workload running on similarly configured hardware and rational partitions, running the cloud instance would cost about 30 percent to 40 percent more on the instance running plenary out over three years compared to buying the iron and using it for three years. The difference, of course, is that IBM is managing the Power Systems and paying for the datacenter, the electricity, the cooling, the security, patch updates on firmware, the installation of the PowerVM hypervisor and its update, and the installation of the IBM i or AIX operating system. When companies buy their own Power Systems machines, unless they pick up augmented services from IBM or a commerce partner, it’s sum on them. Pricing for the virtual machines, the memory, the storage, and the operating system and databases are sum set per hour.
By the way, it is not limpid what IBM i and AIX releases are supported on the machines, but presumably the current IBM i 7.2 and IBM i 7.3 releases are supported on the IBM Cloud as well as AIX 7.1 and AIX 7.2, which are moreover current. Linux is not mentioned as a supported platform, but SAP HANA workloads are and that implies that there is a Linux – and specifically Red Hat Enterprise Linux – underneath it since HANA in-memory databases are not supported on any Unix variant, or IBM i for that matter.
By March, IBM plans to absorb the IBM i and AIX instances available in production in its US East (Washington DC) and US South (Dallas) regions, and in the second quarter IBM plans to roll it in its European datacenter in its EU Central (Frankfurt) region, with other datacenters coming out as claim pulls and IBM pushes.

In the 1990s and well into the 2000s, if you had mission-critical applications that required zero downtime, resiliency, failover and elevated performance, but didn’t want a mainframe, Unix was your go-to solution.
If your database, ERP, HR, payroll, accounting, and other line-of-business apps weren’t hasten on a mainframe, chances are they ran on Unix systems from four dominant vendors: Sun Microsystems, HP, IBM and SGI. Each had its own flavor of Unix and its own custom RISC processor. Servers running an x86 chip were at best used for file and print or maybe low-end departmental servers.
Today it’s a x86 and Linux world, with some Windows Server presence. Virtually every supercomputer on the Top 500 list runs some flavor of Linux and an x86 processor. SGI is long gone. Sun lived on for a while through Oracle, but in 2018 Oracle finally gave up. HP Enterprise only ships a few Unix servers a year, primarily as upgrades to existing customers with faded systems. Only IBM is still in the game, delivering recent systems and advances in its AIX operating system.
We aren’t going to dwell on how they got here. Instead, this is a perceive at where commercial Unix is going, and how and when it will eventually die. (Note: We're specifically talking about the decline of commercial Unix. still flourishing are the free and open-source variants such as FreeBSD, which was born out of the Berkeley Software progress (BSD) project at the University of California, Berkeley, and GNU.)Unix's unhurried decline
Unix’s decline is “more of an artifact of the lack of marketing appeal than it is the lack of any presence,” says Joshua Greenbaum, principal analyst with Enterprise Applications Consulting. “No one markets Unix any more, it’s kind of a departed term. It’s still around, it’s just not built around anyone’s strategy for high-end innovation. There is no future, and it’s not because there’s anything innately wrong with it, it’s just that anything innovative is going to the cloud.”
“The UNIX market is in inexorable decline,” says Daniel Bowers, research director for infrastructure and operations at Gartner. “Only 1 in 85 servers deployed this year uses Solaris, HP-UX, or AIX. Most applications on Unix that can be easily ported to Linux or Windows absorb actually already been moved.”
Most of what remains on Unix today are customized, mission-critical workloads in fields such as fiscal services and healthcare. Because those apps are expensive and risky to migrate or rewrite, Bowers expects a long-tail decline in Unix that might terminal 20 years. “As a viable operating system, it’s got at least 10 years because there’s this long tail. Even 20 years from now, people will still want to hasten it,” he says.Gartner
Gartner tracks the decline of recent Unix sales.
Gartner doesn’t track install base, just recent sales, and the trend is down. In Q1 of 2014, Unix sales totaled $1.6 billion. By Q1 of 2018, sales were at $593 million. In terms of units, Unix sales are low, but they are almost always in the configuration of high-end, heavily decked-out servers that are much larger than your typical two-socket x86 server.IBM the terminal UNIX man standing
It’s remarkable how tight-lipped people are over the status of Unix. Oracle and HPE declined to comment, as did several IBM customers. IBM is still in the game, but Bowers notes, “I perceive IBM investing $34 billion in Red Hat, but I don’t perceive IBM investing $34 billion in AIX.”
Steve Sibley, vice president of cognitive systems offerings at IBM, acknowledges the obvious but says IBM will still absorb a substantial number of clients on AIX in ten years, with the majority of clients being big Fortune 500 clients. He adds that there will moreover be a stable number of midrange customers in some ways “because they don’t want to disburse the investment to pick up off AIX.”
Rob McNelly, senior AIX solutions architect at Meridian IT, a services provider and weighty AIX user, says there is an 80/20 rule for recent applications for AIX: 80% of customers don’t grow their AIX footprint, but 20% stays and expands in AIX.
“Because 20% is the larger enterprise systems, it is a very vast segment. In healthcare, many stable tier 1 production environments continue to invest and devour the stability and security of AIX. Established and embedded ERP systems accomplish likewise at sum layers,” McNelly says.
Many recent applications pursue Linux, which
IBM, which arguably has the largest remaining vast iron server commerce in the world, is one step closer to making systems based on its own Power processors peers to the Xeon-based machinery that utterly dominates its IBM Cloud public cloud. With the latest moves, IBM now has scale-out and scale-up systems based on a blend of its Power8 and Power9 processors available for rent, but these systems are only for the minute running its own AIX variant of Unix and its own IBM i proprietary operating system.
It would not purchase more than a few minutes to load up Linux partitions on the machinery IBM is starting to rollout in several of its datacenters. So don’t reason for a minute that IBM is not going to eventually add advocate for Linux on this public Power infrastructure that it is rolling out. To be honest, it is a bit of a wonder that it is not happening concurrent with the rollout of AIX and IBM i on the cloud.
IBM has been providing hosting and outsourcing services for rent for six decades now, so it is a bit much to convene it a newcomer to selling cloudy infrastructure. The company has dabbled with selling capacity with utility pricing before. remember the entire Supercomputing On-Demand endeavor back in January 2003? This included clusters of systems – people called them grids back then – based on both X86 and Power architectures, with capacity rented, not bought, and it preceded the launch of Amazon Web Services by more than three years. But it is just to thunder that vast Blue did not respond quickly enough to build its own public cloud – neither did other system makers and outsourcers, to be just – and that is why to pick up back in the game it had to disburse around $2 billion to acquire SoftLayer, a hosting provider that moved into virtualized and bare metal clouds that had amassed 25,000 customers and a fleet of over 100,000 servers in 13 datacenters when IBM bought it back in June 2013.
SoftLayer had built its own cloud controller and used the commercial XenServer hypervisor from Citrix Systems to chop up Supermicro servers into virtual slices. IBM sold off its System x X86-based server commerce to Lenovo a year later for $2.3 billion, so there was no intuition to waddle SoftLayer, now known as the IBM Cloud over to System x gear. And the Lenovo cash paid back most of the SoftLayer bill. IBM invested another $1.2 billion in SoftLayer prerogative after the deal was done, and had hoped to build out 40 cloudy datacenters, with hundreds of thousands of machines and millions of virtual machines. They accomplish not know if IBM met these goals, and it doesn’t talk about them anymore in this way.
It took a surprisingly long time for IBM to pick up Power-based machines on its public cloud, and it is limpid in hindsight that vast Blue was waiting until its Power8 servers were fully ramped and it came up with a more cogent Linux strategy on Power Systems machines to really shove Power architectures from the SoftLayer cloud, which it launched in May 2016. The four bare metal instances that debuted then based on its Power Systems LC machines are still available today, based on the very single-socket “Habanero” system created by Tyan, with slightly different prices and with the very configurations that were available nearly three years ago. These Power Systems LC machines advocate Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Canonical Ubuntu Server operating systems and the PowerKVM hypervisor, but only Ubuntu Server was available on the cloudy versions on what is now known as the IBM Cloud. The Power instances are available in IBM Cloud datacenters in San Jose, Dallas, Washington DC, Sao Paulo, London, and Sydney.
IBM has not, as yet, offered cloudy instances of machines running AIX and IBM i, and it has similarly not offered bigger iron – both of which it sorely needed to accomplish to actually offer potential customers the very class of machines on the cloud as they absorb used in their datacenters.
With today’s launch, IBM is getting a bit closer, but it is a shrimp disconcerting that IBM Cloud is only offering SAP HANA in-memory databases atop Linux for running S/4 HANA applications on four-socket and eight-socket “Haswell” Xeon E7-4800 and E7-8800 servers. IBM’s enterprise-class Power E950 and Power E980 machines, which disburse Power9 processors and which scale to four or sixteen sockets, respectively, can hasten circles around this faded Haswell iron. IBM’s Global Technology Services does plenty of outsourcing deals on such iron for running SAP HANA, which is a huge driver of the Power Systems commerce these days, but that is not the very thing as having trusty utility pricing. (We will pick up into SAP HANA on Power in a sever article, because IBM has some unique advantages that it is leveraging well here, and it is taking on Hewlett Packard Enterprise for the mantle in this enterprise arena.) IBM does map to offer SAP HANA on the recent Power cloud instances, so that implies that IBM is going to advocate Linux underneath it. And that moreover implies that it can advocate Linux – and they presume Red Hat Enterprise Linux, considering that IBM is spending $34 billion to acquire Red Hat – on these Power slices on the IBM Cloud.
IBM is chopping up two different types of Power machines on the most recent public cloud, and they are far more useful than the single-socket machines that came out three years ago. In one instance, the Power S922, which is a two-socket machine, is equipped with a pair of ten-core Power9 chips that absorb a basis hasten of 2.8 GHz and that hasten up to 3.9 GHz in Turbo Boost mode. This server tops out at 4 TB of capacity using 2.67 GHz DDR4 memory sticks, and it seems highly unlikely that IBM has configured it this artery given the cost of main memory these days. Customers who requisite a larger memory footprint – they can double or quadruple this – can pay an incremental price and IBM will load up some Power S922 machines with more capacity. The Power S922 servers are configured with disk and sparkle storage, and the instances can absorb anywhere from 10 GB to 2 TB of capacity on either, sold in 10 GB chunks.
IBM is moreover selling slices on a Power E880 servers based on Power8 chips and is planning on adding slices on Power E980 machines that are based on Power9 processors. Both machines scale from four to sixteen sockets, and in the case of the Power E880, IBM has set up systems that disburse the ten-core Power8 chip that spins at 4.19 GHz to deliver systems that scale up to 160 cores in a separate system image. The memory and storage on this cloudy Power E880 scales the very as on the Power S922, with 8 GB to 64 GB per core for memory and up to 2 TB of disk and/or sparkle storage scalable in 10 GB increments.
Both types of Power Systems on the IBM Cloud are back-ended by capacity on IBM’s Storwize V7000 disk arrays, which link to the servers over Fibre Channel links. IBM installs the PowerVM hypervisor and either AIX or IBM i (and presumably Linux in the case of SAP HANA) and then customers maintain everything from the operating system and on up from there while IBM manages from the firmware on down.
Here is the set of features that IBM is rolling out for these Power instances:
IBM has been beta testing this cloudy Power infrastructure in its Washington DC data headquarters since the middle of January. By March, IBM will absorb machines up and running in its Dallas datacenter as well and it will allow production workloads to Make disburse of them. Somewhere in the second quarter it will roll out Power System slices in its Frankfurt datacenter in Germany, with other geographies to follow. It is not limpid when the Power E980 will be brought to the cloud, but what they hear is that claim very elevated for this machine in the fourth quarter and into the first quarter that IBM wants to sell sum of those machines it can to customers that are buying the entire boxes, not renting slices on them.
The pricing on the Power Systems Virtual Server on IBM Cloud has not been finalized yet, but the metering on the processor, memory, and storage is done by the hour. But Sibley likes to accomplish math like they accomplish here at The Next Platform, and he estimates that in like-for-like configurations, if you ran a cloud instance plenary out for three years it would cost somewhere between 30 percent and 40 percent more on the IBM Cloud as it would to acquire it and operate it. This is a very reasonable premium, considering IBM is paying power, cooling, datacenter, switching, and management costs. IBM is moreover offering hourly license fees for AIX and IBM i, the latter of which includes an integrated relational database management system. Presumably IBM’s own DB2 relational database and its WebSphere middleware stack will be available on the machines with hourly pricing, and ditto for Oracle and SAP HANA databases. And in cases where you requisite to demonstrate dedicated capacity – a requirement for database licensing usually – IBM can lock down a slice of a machine, or the entire thing. And finally, the Power slices running on the IBM Cloud will be provisioned using Terraform, an open source utensil from HashiCorp, that is moreover used by the IBM Cloud Private stack, so it will be viable to waddle virtual machines from private to public capacity and back again if necessary.
So how will customers disburse this cloudy Power iron? “I reason initially people will start by testing out their progress and test environments and perceive if it can hasten out here,” says Sibley. “I moreover reason they will perceive people using the cloud for cataclysm recovery for Power Systems, because while companies reason it is alright to own one datacenter, they don’t want to own two. And there is moreover a line of commerce angle, too. They absorb one customer that is starting a recent business, and they want to start it out on the cloud on Power, and maybe some day they will waddle it back to their datacenter and maybe they will keep it there on the cloud.”
We anticipate before too long IBM will be ramping up the PowerKVM hypervisor on the Power S922 machines so Linux can be supported there in a more indigenous format, and that Linux will be added to the vast iron Power E880 and Power E980 boxes using the PowerVM hypervisor. They would not be at sum surprised to perceive the Power E950 systems running AIX and Linux issue sum sliced up on the IBM Cloud, either.
